Contemplative Interventions and Programming
The Mind Body Lab is interested in evaluating several different contemplative interventions and programming to meet the needs of the various populations we work with. Personnel and collaborators of the laboratory work to both empirically research these programs, and also actively provide these services at no charge.

Programming for Students
The Mind Body Lab provides and evaluates contemplative practices for students in elementary, middle, and high schoool grade levels. Service provision is conceptualized in a three-tiered model of support, whereby the type of intervention is matched to specific needs of the students (Felver et al., 2013). In Programming and practices that the Mind Body Lab is currently interested in investigating include:
Soles of the Feet for Students (SOF). At the individual level, SOF is designed to teach students a simple self-regulatory strategy to reduce aggressive and disruptive behavior in the classroom. At the classroom level, SOF can be used to teach a group of students a basic self-regulatory strategy to calm their bodies and support transitions between activities. SOF has been shown to increase academic engagement and reduce disruptive behavior. SOF is typically completed over the course of 5 sessions of thirty-minutes.
Learning to BREATHE (L2B). L2B is a mindfulness-based curriculum for adolescents, designed to strengthen attention and emotion regulation, and to promote overall psychological wellbeing. L2B has been empirically evaluated in several studies, and can be delievered in either 6 or 18 sessions of 45-minutes.
Breathing Awareness Meditation (BAM). BAM teaches students a foundational and basic breathing exercise, whereby students develop attention and reduce physiological stress by mindfully paying attention to the sensations of breathing. BAM has shown to reduce physiological symptoms of stress (e.g., systolic blood pressure) in several empirical evaluations. BAM is taught to students over 5 sessions of thirty-minutes.
Kripalu Yoga in the Schools (KYIS). KYIS teaches adolescents basic self-regulatory and stress-reduction activities through secular yoga practices. KYIS is typically delivered during regulary scheduled physical education class periods by a trained yoga instructor. The curriculum typically runs for half of a school year, for 28 sessions delivered 2-3 times per week (45 minutes).
Dialectical Behavior Therapy for adolescents- skills group (DBT). DBT skills groups are designed to teach adolescents effective skills to regulate emotions, communicate, and reduce stress. DBT skills groups are delivered as part of a general education health or social-emotional learning course requirement, or as part of a targeted group for students at risk of developing more serious social-emotional problems. DBT skills groups typically run for 24 weeks of 45 minute sessions.
Programming for Teachers
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). MBSR is the most widely studied and empirically supported mindfulness curriculum to date, and it has been adopted in numerous studies for a variety of different population. MBSR teaches core mindfulness practices, and it is designed to decrease stress and improve overall wellbeing. MBSR has been adapted for teachers with promising results. MBSR is an 8 week program that involves weekly 2-2.5 hour group sessions in addition to daily home practice.
Cultivating Awareness and Resilience in Education (CARE). CARE is a mindfulness curricula specifically developed for teachers. CARE has been shown to reduce work-related stress and improve teaching satisfaction and efficacy. The CARE curriculum involves 4 full-day workshops spaced over 2-3 weeks, and it includes on-going phone consultation.
Mindful Life – Online intensive program. The Mindful Life online programming is designed to instruct basic mindfulness skills for teachers to use in the classroom, both for themselves and for their students. This curriculum is delivered over 6 online modules lasting for 45-60 minutes, and it includes lesson plans for teachers to use.
